Hemorrhoids, which are also known as piles, are in fact inflamed veins in the anus or lower rectum. In most of the cases, hemorrhoids will heal without the patient to even be aware of their presence, but in other cases they lead to swellings, rectal bleeding, discomfort and intense pain. There are several types of hemorrhoids:

1. Internal hemorrhoids which are situated within the anus of lower rectum
2. External hemorrhoids which lie on the outer side of the anal opening
3. Prolapsed hemorrhoids which are in fact internal hemorrhoids that are so deformed that they bulge out of the anal opening
4. Thrombosed hemorrhoids which are and aggravated form of hemorrhoids, being the most painful of type
Most of the patients suffer from just one form, but it’s not unusual for more hemorrhoid types to be present simultaneously. When the blood clogs and forms an external hemorrhoid, a painful lump may form leading to a condition called a thrombosed hemorrhoid.
Internal and external hemorrhoids are a somewhat common condition, mostly among the people who are past 30 years of age. All in all, over 75% of the American population will have to deal with this condition at least once in a life time. Statistically, men are more likely to suffer from different types of hemorrhoids that are severe enough to require professional hemorrhoid treatment like ointments, suppositories or even hemorrhoid surgery. In the case of women, the most probable period to develop such a condition is during pregnancy, but usually the hemorrhoids disappear not long after delivery.
