Hemorrhoid prevention

In order to prevent the appearance of any type of hemorrhoids, it is necessary to undertake some very important steps mostly considering our diet habits. It is advisable to eat more fiber-rich foods like fruit and vegetables. Some nutritionists also recommend cereals, but recent studies show that cereals are in fact doing more harm than good, due to the fact that they only recently entered the human diet and the body has not yet adapted to properly digest them.

Other preventive measures include exercising more, losing those extra pounds, drinking more liquids, having a better posture and shortening bowel movement time or in plain English, spending less time on the toilet. Specialists also recommend wearing loose underwear and loose clothes in general due to the fact that tight ones favor irritations and lead to poor muscle tone, thus enabling hemorrhoid development.

Hemorrhoids appear because the anal veins are thin and they rupture during high blood pressure. So, by strengthening the veins in the rectal area, we can greatly reduce the risk of hemorrhoids cases. This can be achieved by consuming more blueberries, blackberries, cherries and more vitamin C, all of them having natural active elements that contribute to vein strengthening. Other dietary wonders in preventing and treating hemorrhoids are considered to be tinctures, plant pigments, fruit, tea and soy products.

It is also advisable to avoid constipation as much as possible because it increases the pressure and strain within the lower rectum. And according to Dr. Berko Sikirov’s study, adopting the squatting posture during defecation can greatly decrease the risk of hemorrhoid incidence. The squatting posture can be easily attained by raising the feet on a bench or footstool placed alongside the toilet bowl. The popular habit of reading during defecating in a sitting position is discouraged, because sustaining this position for a prolonged period of time will greatly increase the risk of developing all of the hemorrhoid types. Irritation may be also provoked by excessive cleaning, rubbing and wiping of the anal area after normal bowel movement.
